Atmospheric CO2 to reach 400 parts per million all year round

According to a report published in Nature on 13 June 2016, this will be the first year where atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations will be above the symbolic 400 parts per million level all year round, at the benchmark site for atmospheric CO2 measurements in Mauna Loa, Hawaii.

This is largely due to the El Niño climate cycle in the Pacific Ocean, giving a boost to the year-on-year rise in anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions.

CO2 levels of over 400 ppm were first recorded at Mauna Loa on 9 May 2013. See viewtopic.php?f=86&t=158&p=239&hilit=400#p239

However, according to BP's annual energy review, Carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption grew by just 0.1 per cent last year in their smallest advance since 2009, due to lower coal use and sluggish growth. This is a significant reduction from the 0.5 per cent rise in 2014.

According to a new infographic, published by British Gas, the UK had reduced its carbon emissions by 27.7% by 2014; however it is still in the top 20 highest carbon emitting countries in the world.

Scotland, however, had already achieved it's 2020 greenhouse gas emissions target by 2014, according to new figures, published on 14 June 2016. See viewtopic.php?f=110&t=844
