Battery Storage to be used for balancing the national grid
Winners included EDF Energy Renewables' 49MW at its West Burton power station in Nottinghamshire, Vattenfall’s 22MW at Pen y Cymoedd wind farm in South Wales and E.ON’s 10MW at its Blackburn Meadow CHP plant in Sheffield. Other successful parties were RES, Belectric, Element Power and Low Carbon.
Battery energy storage is set to play an ever more important role in grid infrastructure, by allowing power companies to time shift energy to when electricity is needed, to handle higher volumes of intermittent wind and solar power, and to maintain the grid system frequency at 50Hz.
The 201 megawatts of total capacity, awarded through the tender, will be on the grid by April 2018. Previously the fastest frequency response was delivered in under ten seconds, however, the new class of technology means the response time will be under one second, resulting in a reduction in costs of approximately 200 million pounds.
