Dr Mike Page

Workshop 2: Psychology & Best Practice in energy efficiency & climate change
Download Dr Mike Page’s presentationDownload presentation slides (ppt: 2.34 MB)

Dr Mike Page received a first-class degree in Engineering Science from Oxford University before completing a PhD in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University. He then embarked on an academic career as a cognitive psychologist, initially as a scientist at the MRC Applied Psychology Unit in Cambridge and, since 2000, as a Reader in Cognitive Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire. In recent years, he has moved his research focus from the study of human memory to the topic of pro-environmental behaviour change. This change in direction was motivated as much by personal conviction as by his view that the mitigation of climate change is likely to involve equal parts of both engineering and psychology. He is the Director of the EASIER Project, which brings carbon-reduction advice to small and medium-sized businesses in the East of England. He is also Director of the CUBE Project, that involves the design and build of a small home in which one person can live with a minimum impact on the environment. He works as part of the Green Potential consultancy, a joint venture between the University of Hertfordshire and Exemplas Ltd., and regularly gives talks about personal carbon reduction under the heading “Your Carbon Counts”.

Workshop 2: Psychology & Best Practice in energy efficiency & climate change

Currently I am involved in research in Environmental Psychology at the University of Plymouth. Prior to this, I spent 20 years in FE education, teaching Business and Marketing and managing courses. I became deeply interested in the psychology of learning and behaviour, during this time and completed a Psychology degree in 2005, but got totally hooked by Psychology! In 2007, I started a p/t PhD in Environmental Psychology, focussing on the design of interventions promoting energy conservation behaviours. Having seen infrared images of homes losing heat, I became interested in the impact on the homeowner, of exposure to this style of vivid, often self explanatory and clear imagery. I am investigating this, as well as the impact that viewing these has on energy saving behaviours. In 2007-9, I worked with climate action groups in the South West on an initial pilot study and in 2009 joined forces with the Eden Project and Homebase/Argos to investigate the reaction of 100 homes across the UK. This led to a research series award from the RICS. I also work at the University of Plymouth in the School of Psychology; teaching and providing research support.
