Scotland News and Announcements • Scottish Government commits to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions

Climate Change Secretary Roseanna Cunningham has announced that Scotland will become one of the first countries to achieve a 100% reduction in carbon emissions, under a new Climate Change Bill introduced on 23 May 2018.

The new draft Bill will immediately set a target of a 90% reduction by 2050, which the UK Committee on Climate Change (UK CCC) states is currently “at the limit of feasibility.” The Bill also sets out that the Scottish Government intends to achieve a 100% reduction in carbon emissions, known as ‘net-zero’, as soon as possible.

Ministers will be legally required to keep the net-zero target date under review by seeking expert advice on the issue every five years. The target date will become legally-binding, subject to the consent of the Scottish Parliament, as soon as there is sufficient evidence to demonstrate the date is credible and achievable.

The Scottish Government has announced that funding of more than £54m is to go towards tackling fuel poverty in Scotland, as part of its newly published Route Map titled Energy Efficient Scotland.

Energy Efficient Scotland delivers across two key policy areas of Government: fuel poverty and climate change. Because of this, the Route Map has two main objectives "removing poor energy efficiency as a driver for fuel poverty" and "Reducing greenhouse gas emissions through more energy efficient buildings and decarbonising our heat supply".

Scotland News and Announcements • Scotland reached 2020 emissions target in 2014

According to figures published on 14 June 2016, Scotland managed to reach its 2020 target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions six years early.

The Scottish Government had set its target for 2020 of a 42% reduction in greenhouse gasses compared to 1990 levels; the new figures show that the nation's emissions were 45.8% below 1990 levels in 2014.

Scotland has also set a target to cut emissions by 80% by 2050.

However, according to a BBC article, environmental campaigners have said the loss of heavy industry and warm winters contributed more to the cut in emissions than bold government policy.

Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, officially launched 'Warmer Homes Scotland' on 15 September 2015 - a £224 million energy efficiency scheme, aimed at fuel-poor and vulnerable households.

Funding for the scheme was first announced in April.
