BEIS Consultation on the Domestic Private Rented Sector minimum level of energy efficiency

On 19 December 2017, BEIS published its consultation on the Domestic Private Rented Sector Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard, which is due to come into force for new tenancies from April 2018.

The consultation proposes a cap on costs to landlords to improve the energy efficiency of each of their properties of £2,500. However, prior to the release of this consultation, it had been anticipated that a cost cap of £5,000 might be introduced, in line with the recommendations of the Committee on Fuel Poverty's 2017 annual report (see https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... tober-2017).

The End Fuel Poverty Coalition has pointed out that, using the government's own figures from the draft impact assessment, published alongside the consultation, a spend of £2,500 would enable only 30% of F and G-rated properties in the private rented sector to be improved to band E.

The deadline for responses to the consultation is 13 March 2018.
