Only four per cent of landlords aware of MEES regulation

Specialist insurance provider Just Landlords has found that only four per cent of nearly 500 landlords they surveyed were aware of the forthcoming Private Rented Sector (PRS) Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards regulations (MEES). Just three in ten said they knew their property’s EPC rating, while only 52 per cent knew that improving the insulation of the home could have a large impact.

The MEES regulations mean that for new tenancies from 1 April 2018 properties must have an Energy Performance Certificate rating of E or above unless an exemption has been validly registered on the PRS Exemptions Register.

The recent Government consultation, which proposed a cap on costs to landlords to improve the energy efficiency of each of their properties of £2,500, closed on 13 March 2018.
