The Government has published its response to the 2019 Future Homes Standard consultation. From 2025, new homes will not be built with fossil-fuel heating, and will be future-proofed, so that no further energy-efficiency work will be needed for them to become zero carbon. The role of local authorities in setting energy-efficiency requirements for new homes is to be clarified, and for now, local authorities keep powers to set local energy-efficiency standards for new homes. There will be a 2021 interim uplift in energy conservation standards, to reduce carbon and provide a step up for industry towards the new Standard. Transitional arrangements will provide all developers with certainty about the standards they are building to.
